How to make your own yoga mat cleaner
Practicing yoga on a clean, lovely-smelling mat is a totally different experience. Additionally, a pleasant scent will likely increase the chances that you’ll show up on your mat more often.
Making your own yoga mat cleaner is very easy and only requires a few basic ingredients. What’s more, mixing your own ingredients ensures that there are no harmful substances added to it.
Before you begin, consult your mat manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Depending on the material it is made of (natural rubber, for example), this cleaner might not be suitable for your mat and affect the surface and its durability.

Materials needed:
- a 500 ml spray bottle. A dark glass container will help preserving the mix for longer time, protecting it from UV light.
- Label
- Alternative: a funnel
Ingredients:
- 350 ml distilled water. You can find it in large supermarkets.
- 150 ml witch hazel (Hamamelis water) – you can buy it at the pharmacy or order it online. Alternatively, you can use apple cider vinegar which has antibacterial properties but a strong smell. Another choice is to use vodka (any cheap brand will do). But if you prefer and alcohol-free alternative, stick to the witch hazel or the apple cider vinegar.
- Essential oils, preferably organic. Here in Switzerland I love these.
